Where would we be without our devices?
Where would we be without our devices?

Not long ago, I was given the opportunity to try to copy a Bill Davidson oil.  The falls take up a good third of the canvas and falls are always a good challenge.  Here it is an an unfinished stage so you can see what I'm talking about.  With the last stage next to it.

When I had finished the beginning stages and had entered the more subtle issues stage, I realized that for the first time, a painting in process was talking to me.  Not any "Good morning, Andy. You had better get this big boulder over here right."  But in a more subtle way, it was as if there was a Painting Being in this painting, and it was clearly watching me as I put the paint on the canvas.  With some trepidation (who likes to look like they've slipped into a hallucinatory phase?), I began to ask around.  And I was thrilled to discover that this phenomenon is not that unusual for artists of all kinds.  A couple of writers confirmed that it happened for them.  And some painters, too.  So now I listen with an ear toward hearing what the painting is saying to me about the next challenge.  Frankly, its a wonderful thing.  Still working on the painting but  the latest version is by its side.

I loved the flower workshop with Patrick Saunders that I attended in Newnan in February and here are some results from that workshop.

My work in portraiture continues and is wonderful.  Here's a recent one.

One last thing:  STAR had a fundraiser using several of my paintings as the vehicle and I'm pleased to report that nine of the ten paintings found new homes.  Feels very good.

On the horizon are a couple more workshops, one still life with Marc Chatov and a landscape with a new Australian that Jim Richards is hosting.  Then there are the plein air events in Duluth and Sautee Nacochee and with OLPA.  Exciting opportunities to improve and have fun all the while.

It would be great to hear from you if you have a moment.

Best wishes, Andy
